he knows me, he really knows me

my husband & i are only about 2 weeks from our 13th anniversary and i was thinking i'd save this post til then, but we're moving next week & my brain is all befuddled, so there's no telling when i'll have time or inspiration again.

last weekend while we were out of town in the mountains for a few days, we had a really great, relaxing time. that first night, arriving in that little town & sitting down on the couch beside my honey after brooke was tucked into bed in our cabin, i felt my soul take a deep, cleansing breath such as it hadn't taken in a very long time. it was just the thing we needed, even in spite of all the things that needed to be done at home.

i took tons of pictures as we wandered through the woods, meandered through the strip of tourist crap and wound our way through a nice zoo.

it was our last night, just a few more hours and we'd be headed back into reality. we had eaten in a nice restaurant & were driving through the back of a parking lot when something caught my eye. i was craning my neck to figure out what it was. "there's a dead duck lying on that curb over there!" i said. he looks at me, looks at the duck & says, "want me to drive closer so you can take a picture of it?"

i blinked a couple times before i burst out laughing, because of COURSE i wanted to take a picture of it! and even though i know that's kind of dark & creepy and not particularly lady-like, i totally wanted to get all up close to that dead thing so i could check it out & take a picture of it. but i wouldn't have asked because i didn't want to gross out my love. there have been so many dead creatures that we've seen & generally i don't have my camera handy when i stumble across their permanently ended paths, but here i was, camera in reach & there was a duck carcass just begging for its photo to be taken.

so chris drove up all close & positioned me just right for a good look at that dead duck. and i got my one shot of it that of course i now need to share with you guys. because who doesn't want to look at a duck dangling over the edge of a curb? who knows, it may be the only picture ever taken of him and now he will be remembered forever as the last picture i took on vacation & a sign of how well my honey knows me.

  5. lol it's 16.5 years over here (6.5 married; I wasn't a child bride haha!) and I love those dead duck moments! OK I actually would have run away from the carcass, but you know what I mean. Whether it's your spouse or long-time friend, there's something special about spending time with someone who just gets you, and you don't have to explain a thing.

  6. i kind of thought you guys would read this post & share your "you big icky ick, wanting to take pictures of a dead thing. you scare me" kinds of thoughts. but instead you're getting it that it was more about him knowing me so well & less about the actual duck.
so you guys get me too! yay!

  10. Oh Sherilin. Sherilin, Sherilin, Sherilin. Only you would take and post a pic of a dead duck. It's just like you to DRAW ME IN to a lovely story, and picture journey of your vacay, and then TWIST MY STOMACH with that last pic. It's the pedi egg all over again.

  12. Poor duck suffered a terrible quack-up (NOTE: That never gets old. On second thought, maybe it does).
    Congratulations on your 13th!
Mrs. Penwasser and I go for our 25th this Tuesday. Poor girl. She has terrible taste in men. What's even worse for her: she's been married to me for over half her life.

  13. Okay, while I'm here. Reminds me of a funny story (I may have told someone already)...
When I was overseas in 1989, I was working the midnight shift in a deserted hangar. As I was walking from the bathroom back to the Duty Office (back to the DUTY Office after doing DOOTY. Hee hee hee), I saw a dead pigeon lying (or laying? Crap, I can never get that straight). Coming closer, I saw what looked like a note under its cold lifeless carcass. I saw that it had writing on it which said, "Leave a wake-up call for 7 AM. Signed, A. Pigeon"
Laughter in a deserted hangar at 2 am is kinda creepy.

  14. Ya know, it never occurred to me to take pictures of any of the dead animals around here. Do you have an album? Call it- Dead Things I've Seen.
But, it's great that your honey knows what you like and supports it.

  23. Is it possible to laugh and cringe at the same time? I was also thinking "she won't post that picture will she?" but yes, yes you did. I just had a nightmare about a half cat half scorpion biting me-- what will I have now after seeing a dead Donald?
You did get some wonderful photos of the family!

Too funny. It's great to know that your husband gets you. I can see by this post that you and I should never try to travel together-- we'd never get anywhere (but have hundreds of photos to show for it!) ;-)
