be nice, smile for a change!

do you ever go out shopping or to the movies or anywhere in public & see a kid dressed like some wacky thing? it might be a super hero or a furbie or a princess? and maybe that kid seems to you to be too old for wearing costumes out. but you don't know that kid. or that family. and there might be a really good reason to smile at that kid rather than smirk or whisper in a mocking sort of way to your companion. have you ever seen the show parenthood ?  if you have, think of max braverman and his pirate costume.

so when you see this girl, be nice, please! this is brooke. we're pretty sure she has aspergers and costumes make her gloriously happy. they are harmless and fun. they hurt no one and cause no drama except when strangers are rude.

the next time you come across a kid in a costume, smile! maybe even wave. that's a happy kid you're seeing, even if their face doesn't show it.

but if you see this lady, feel free to mock & throw tomatoes. she needs to take that thing off her head.

  2. Little kids in costume don't bug me but a mom with shockingly BLUE hair at costco did. Her redemption, was so sweet. To her about 4 month old, as she parked just outside the cold storage where they keep the veggies:" Hold on baby, momma's gonna quickly run and get lettuce...I don't want you to get cold, I will be right back"

run she did and she did not leave that kid out of her sight for a second.

I forgave her for her blue hair, and hailed her as a great mom.

  4. As long as she is happy.
People are staring because they have the same costume at home...

  6. I see a kid in a furry costume like Brooke's, and I'm like, "Hey kid, can I borrow that? I'm freezing!"

  7. What a sweetie. I will definitely hug the next kid I see in a costume...or maybe just smile and wave so that I dont look like a creepo.

  8. That costume is totally rocking!

It's sad when people feel the need to get all judgey on each other because of clothing or hair or whatever. I love seeing kids going through life filled with wonder and joy and it makes me a giant crab when I see people trying to smush it out of them.

I think we'd all be happier if we felt confident wearing a killer costume out and about and went through life as happy Brooke is in those pictures!

  9. ok, so maybe you guys who commented are the ones who would be high-fiving her as she prowled past, all stealthy like.

melissa, good for that blue haired mama who kept her baby warm & ran for lettuce. just goes to show that you never know who the person is just by looking at them.

  10. Too cute! This had me laughing because it reminded me of the time my son wanted to wear his Halloween costume to pick up his sister from school (even though it was December.) No problem until we were in the parking lot and I remembered we had to stop at the doctor's office to pick up a prescription. But we all marched happily in and I giggled the whole time at my little Scooby Doo.

  12. Brooke, you are GORGEOUS!
love the costume, reminds me of one I made in highschool for Estedford. (We were a bunch of cats).
My son used to do this all the time to. I remember walking through the shops with him wearing big sunglasses, reindeer antlers and my swimming medals round his neck.
Have you not had her diagnosed for sure? We were lucky in that my hubby's best friends mother is one of the leading childens doctor in Australia, so we got an appointment with her straight away instead of waiting for two years. (helps to know people. lol)
Love the last pic BTW, You are a nut! :)

  13. Love the costume Brooke!

I get so aggravated at older kids and so called adults that can't let kids have a simple good time.

  14. I always smile when in the presence of child or adult in costume. Life's too short, not to have crazy fun.

  17. I have nothing against kids in costume at any time.

I do get rather irate at parents who will insist on making their children wear weird clothing when the kids obviously don't want to wear them (not that I think you do that).

I have already put an order in for 10 kilos of squishy tomatoes and smelly eggs .... just in case I see that 'lady'.

  18. Love it & love her costumes & love Parenthood! Imagine...a parent who lets her child be who she's comfortable being. The nerve.

  19. I think adults as well as children should regularly show up in public places sporting costumes...as long as they're not carrying concealed weapons.

  21. :) I worked with kids who had Aperger's for a long time...It's an interesting world, and I totally agree with you. Whatever makes them happy- especially something so inoccuous(sp?) as this!

  22. OH, I love it when kids wear fun stuff out and about. It would be against my nature to think otherwise! And, I just love little Bonnie on Toy Story 3 - she wears her tutu and rain boots everywhere.

  23. those photos of her a just gorgeous! What a beautiful girl! I am sorry people judge - people can be stupid :( and I LOVE parenthood!

  24. Whatever could be wrong with kid doing what kids do: ie having a bit of fun? If people react badly to your daughter in costume, they must be very sad individuals!

  25. I love kids in costume! Especially your Brooke, she's so cute.

  26. Sadly it's the KIDS of today, just as much as, if not more than the adults who look at something whimsical and fun like the costume thing, and become disgusted and judgemental. There don't seem to be many kids who just want to be kids anymore.

  27. i would have to agree with kipp & karen in that it's often the kids who are the worst with the looks & snark-fest. i guess they think that they're too cool for such childishness & anyone who would dare to still enjoy the things of childhood must be very foolish indeed. but i'd much rather have a kid who's a kid than a kid who thinks she's a teenager, talking about boobs, boys & makeup.
